Project Development Engineer

Job Summary:

The Project Development Engineer is responsible for conducting and organizing early-stage engineering scopes associated with the development of utility-scale onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects. Working closely with the project team, this person will focus on completion of preliminary engineering to pace with overall project development, contractor bidding, project investment approval, and transition to Construction Engineering. In addition to strong conceptual and practical renewables development engineering knowledge and experience, the successful candidate will have a proven track-record of using engineering analysis to reach sound conclusions and recommendations relative to project performance and profitability.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and engineer utility scale solar PV projects using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and PVcase.
  • Prepares drawings for civil and structural aspects of PV design, plus detailed diagrams (such as single/three-line diagrams) for the PV and general project systems.
  • Act as QA/QC for OE generated preliminary and detailed designs for quality, accuracy, and adherence to Avangrid standards.
  • Serve as engineering technical interface with key Avangrid stakeholder teams, including GIS, Development & Origination, Environmental & Permitting, Transmission/Interconnect, Capital Estimating, Scheduling, Meteorology, Project Engineering, and Project Management, to advance development projects to investment approval.
  • Direct electrical and civil design basis, scope documentation, engineering and design of preliminary transmission, substation, and balance of plant design for wind, PV, and BESS projects.
  • Define base cases and evaluate alternative configurations.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary design reviews and optimization while identifying cost and other value engineering opportunities.
  • Support transmission interconnection planning, contracting, and transmission owner coordination. Manage electrical studies to define electrical parameters of the project and components, including review and input into interconnection study reports, and definition of grid integration and interconnection requirements.
  • Coordinate engineering with permitting requirements to ensure designs respect wetlands, sensitive areas, stormwater treatment, erosion and sedimentation requirements, and all other identified constraints.
  • Effectively manage external engineering partners.
  • Lead collaborative analysis and review of projects, studies, and best practices with Global Engineering groups.
  • Ensure project risks are identified, understood, and addressed prior to investment approval.
  • Oversee quality aspects of engineering, including compliance with design standards and accuracy of documentation, field analysis and reporting, and test data.
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of design standards and criteria for project infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders throughout project development to ensure that construction and operational requirements and lessons learned have been appropriately considered.
  • Collaborate with the project execution team as needed for smooth transition from Development to Construction.

Experience / Education

  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience leading renewable energy projects and consultant/vendor selection, management, procurement, and contracting.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent education; preference may be giving to candidates with relevant advanced degree(s).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration and applicable field experience preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Influencing and communication skills to articulate technical concepts.
  • Aptitude for agility during fluctuating development stages and strategies.
  • Ability to analyze, review, and integrate many different engineering disciplines, such as electrical (transmission, substation, collection) and civil (grading, geotechnical, structural, roads, transportation) for different applications (PV, wind, BESS, hydrogen).
  • Knowledge of various aspects of renewable projects such as turbine specifications, GSU design and selection, solar module and inverter selection, battery systems, and collector system, overhead collection, transmission, and substation designs.
  • Working knowledge of renewable energy industry construction practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Earth, OPC, Visio, and AutoCAD.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Civil: BOP design for renewables projects, geotechnical investigation, structural analysis, road design.
    • High Voltage: Substation/transmission design and engineering.
    • PV design and proficiency in pvDesign, PVCase, PVSyst, and other PV design tools.
    • Battery energy storage system development, analysis, engineering, and/or construction.
