Assistant Chief Engineer

  • Assists the Chief in reinforcing all safety and environmental policies and procedures, recognizes safety hazards and environmental risks, and proposes methods to eliminate them.
  • Assists the Chief with managing the timely completion of all preventative and corrective maintenance assignments.
  • Assist the Chief with scheduling of personnel in Central Utility Plant, and substitutes for Operating Engineers' shifts when needed.
  • Performs ongoing preventive and repair work orders on facility building envelope, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other installed systems, equipment, and components.
  • Monitor BMS systems, respond to alarms, and diagnose to resolution.
  • Diagnose, inspect, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment and controls including but not limited to refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, boilers, chillers, pumps, CRACs, fans.
  • Diagnose, inspect, repair, and maintain plumbing components including restroom fixtures, flush valves, water fountains, sinks, drains, water heaters, piping, sump pumps.
  • Diagnose, inspect, repair, and maintain electrical components including all types of lamp replacement, ballast replacement, fixtures, motors, basic wiring components.
  • Orders materials to support maintenance of Plumbing, Electric, HVAC/Controls, and Toxic Monitoring systems.
  • Recommends building and walkway modifications and equipment replacement or major repair.
  • Perform assigned facility rounds and by being proactive; reports on conditions impacting building appearance, satisfactory client occupancy and operations.
  • Lead and share knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, safety, tool use, and other skills with team members.
  • Must be willing and able to support any after-hours building related activity including Spring and Labor Day Weekend building shutdown activities.
  • Participates as a member of the on-site emergency response team.
  • Works with employees and contractors to arrange Small Job casework, lab exhaust sheet metal work, and valving/switching operations.
  • Arrange for PM service visits, repairs, and documentation for Emergency Generators, Air compressors, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Kitchen Drain jetting, outdoor catch basins cleaning, and toxic monitoring system.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Have a minimum of 5 years of applicable working experience in general building repair and maintenance. High school diploma or equivalent years of relevant experience. Knowledge of the following -- basic carpentry, basic HVAC/Controls, basic plumbing, and basic electrical. Prefer experience operating chillers and boilers. Prefer supervisory experience.

Ability to frequently walk up and down stairs for inspections and emergency procedure practice or implementation. Ability to climb ladders up to 40 feet and lift 60 lbs. repeatedly. Ability to locate equipment sound source, ability to discern color of alarm indicators. Equipment inspections may require getting on hands and knees to reach areas difficult to access. Ability to operate various hand tools.

Requires the ability to analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of any problems/malfunctions, and take corrective action as required. Requires ability to communicate well in both oral and written reports, requires excellent customer service skills, and requires teamwork attitude. Must be able to work and act independently, safely, and make solid decisions in the field.
