BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Summer Intern programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.

What you will be doing As a Law Summer Intern, you could be working with a variety of specialist teams across the whole of BAE and with counterparts in the Ministry of defence and other companies who contribute to the design, build and maintenance of the submarine (e.g. Babcock and Rolls Royce) across all submarine programmes.

Fundamentally, you will play a key role in helping other employees at BAE understand legislation and how it affects their role in designing, building, testing and maintaining the submarine. You will be involved in the identification of legislation, management of product legislation, the upkeep of product legislation databases, reviewing relevant documents and writing technical reports.

You will also have the opportunity to get involved in all stages of the Submarines lifecycle, from concept design, through to activities with the in-service fleet. In addition you may have the opportunity to get involved with research around what legislation could be applicable to a new concept.

Duties and Responsibilities •    Identify legislation applicable to systems and equipment on the submarine to make sure the submarines can be operated, maintained and decommissioned in accordance with relevant legislation. •    Ensure that as a place of work, the Royal Navy and BAE can discharge their responsibilities as an employers (e.g. during sea trials). •    Supporting BAE employees understanding the legislative requirements as it applies to their role and the system(s) they oversee. •    Assist in the development, maintenance and upkeep of core documentation including Product Legislation Management conformity report, Legislation registers, Principles, Processes and Plans, Specific Project Deliverables (e.g. assessment of materials to be used in build from a legal perspective), Surveillance of changes to legislation. •    Support the legal assessment of systems and equipment on all classes of submarine designed, built and tested at Barrow.

Skills As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on track to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law (LLB Hons/ LLB)

To be considered for this role you must be returning to university to complete your degree.

These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
