BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Graduate programme you will be required to attend your site, 5 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business.

What you will be doing As an Industrial Placement Product Development Engineer you will assist in developing manufacturing processes from concept through to commissioning trials and qualification. You will see product development over the whole of the product lifecycle. BAE Systems Land (UK) design and manufacture a wide range of munitions products. It is essential that our products are high quality and totally conform to the customer’s requirements.

This role is wide-ranging and has both practical and theoretical elements. You will often be viewed as a multi-disciplined engineer, with knowledge of materials science, mechanical engineering and production techniques. You will ensure that new processes are proven capable of meeting design tolerances, with high production yield at the volume manufacture stage. We will help you develop into an engineer that delivers safe, capable processes for optimised manufacture to specified standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working closely within an integrated Process and Product Development team.
  • Planning and subsequent delivery of Process Engineering Tasks.
  • Attainment of knowledge and experience in the design process and implementation of new technologies.
  • Taking the opportunity to lead in Continuous Improvement projects.
  • Planning, carrying out and reporting results from process development trials. Compiling technical data to support design approval.
  • Alongside experienced engineers, specifying and qualifying new equipment used to manufacture munitions products.
  • Ensuring there is a detailed Safe System of Work in place for the new processes you develop. This will include carrying out detailed Risk Assessments.
  • Gaining knowledge and experience from supporting the Manufacturing Team in resolving any issues that may arise.

Skills As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on track to obtain a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Physics or related disciplines. 

To be considered for this role you must be returning to university to complete your degree.

Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
