Celebrating Earth Day with AB InBev

This week we celebrate Earth Day. Tim Moerman, Sustainability & ESG Director Europe for AB InBev, spoke to myGwork about sustainability initiative in AB InBev.

His work focuses on circular packaging, net zero carbon emissions, water mgmt., supply chain D&I and entrepreneurship. Tim was previously the Corporate Affairs Manager for AB InBev in Europe and before that he spent 8 years with EY in the sustainability consulting department.

Hi Tim, thanks for chatting to us! What does Earth Day mean to you as an organization?

Beer is Natural, Local and Inclusive – at AB InBev we work with nature instead of against it. We rely on water and simple natural ingredients to brew the best beers

Why is sustainability important to you?

Environmental and Social sustainability are inherent to our company and our category. Beer has been bringing people together for centuries and at AB InBev we are all dreaming big to create a future with even more cheers!

Why do you think it’s important organizations/workplaces think about sustainability?

Sustainability eventually means the ability to sustain, as a company we want to be around for 100+ years to come so we’re focused on the long term

Tell us about a sustainability initiative at your organization.

We have a global Accelerator program through which we partner with innovative start-ups and entrepreneurs to solve some of the most pressing sustainability issues.

Tell us what you will be doing to mark Earth Day this year. Or what you have done in a previous year.

As we have a net zero ambition for 2040, we are very proud that we have reached 100% renewable electricity in our operations in Europe already end last year. This year we are all focused on the decarbonization of our breweries while at the same time engaging our supply chain partners to also advance on their net zero progress – for this we’re deploying our Eclipse platform with our suppliers.

What advice would you give someone wanting to bring up the topic of sustainability in the workplace and incorporate this into the organization’s daily practice?

Understand your environmental and social footprint, build a strategy that makes sense for your product/service AND for the communities that you serve, there are no single magical solutions, and learn from/rely on partners and suppliers – you can’t do it alone, but many people are working on the same challenges as you are!
