Boycott Called for Brunei Owned Hotels and Businesses After Gay Death Penalty

A boycott has been called for all Brunei-owned businesses after it was reported that the country would be re-introducing deeply archaic laws that punish homosexuality with death by stoning, Deadline reports.

The new laws are part of an update to the country’s penal code.

“Among the punishments will be the amputation of limbs for theft, the death penalty for apostasy, and a range of punishments for those found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with members of the same gender and adultery,” the human rights advocacy group, The Brunei Project, has reported.

Brunei is an incredibly wealthy country located next to Malaysia on the island of Borneo. The government owns a number of high-end hotel chains, Royal Brunei Airlines, and several large real estate holdings around the world.

People have called for a boycott of these businesses, especially the hotels.

“Every single time we stay at or take meetings at or dine at any of these nine hotels we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery,”George Clooney has said in an op-ed for Deadline.

“Brunei is a Monarchy and certainly any boycott would have little effect on changing these laws,” he adds. “But are we really going to help pay for these human rights violations? Are we really going to help fund the murder of innocent citizens?”

The hotels owned by Brunei include:

The Dorchester, London, UK

The Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, USA

Plaza Athénée, Paris, France

Le Meurice, Paris, France

Principe di Savoia, Milan, Italy

Hotel Bel-Air, Los Angeles, USA

Coworth Park, Ascot, UK

45 Park Lane, London, UK

Hotel Eden, Rome, Italy
