Brunei Prime Minister Defends Gay Death Penalty

The Brunei Prime Minister’s office has released a statement to Reuters today defending the archaic new laws the country is introducing, which includes death by stoning for those found guilty of homosexuality.

“The (Sharia) Law, apart from criminalising and deterring acts that are against the teachings of Islam, also aims to educate, respect and protect the legitimate rights of all individuals, society or nationality of any faiths and race,” the statement reads.

The new laws are part of a three-phase rollout of a stricter Islamic code, the first of which began being implemented in 2014.

“Among the punishments will be the amputation of limbs for theft, the death penalty for apostasy, and a range of punishments for those found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with members of the same gender and adultery,” the human rights advocacy group, The Brunei Project, has reported.

Many celebrities are calling for a boycott of all businesses owned by the country, which include several luxury hotels and an airline.
