Christine Hallquist becomes first trans person to be nominated for Governor
Christine Hallquist has become the first trans person to win a nomination for a gubernatorial race for a major party in the United States.
Hallquist won against three other nominees for the Democratic nomination in Vermont. She will go against Republican incumbent governor Phil Scot in November.
Hallquist is running on an anti-Trump platform, with a focus on LGBT-rights, rural economic development, Medicare and the public education system.
“Nationally, I want to be known as the first trans candidate,” she said to AP.
“We’re proud of Christine’s historic candidacy, and we welcome her to the most diverse crop of gubernatorial nominees in American history,” said Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington state, who is also head of the Democratic Governors Association.
