Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa blasts Government’s failings and “attacking” of minorities

‘Doctor Who’ star Ncuti Gatwa has criticised the Government for its failures and “attacking” of minorities, slamming politicians for “openly attacking marginalised communities.”

According to ‘Mirror’, the newly appointed Time Lord expressed his concerns over recent statements made by MPs on trans issues and immigration.

Ncuti, 31, stated: “Everything trickles down from the top, and when you see politicians openly attacking marginalised communities, when you see our politicians openly attacking trans people, it makes it OK for everyone else.

“And it is alarming to witness that we have reached a stage where it's acceptable to target vulnerable individuals because that’s essentially what’s happening. Those who are most vulnerable, most disenfranchised, and most disconnected are being labeled as threats. It’s depraved because it conceals your own failures.

“You’re going to blame immigrants, Black and Brown people, trans people, queer people, to cover up that you’re not actually doing anything for the populace? It’s simpler to sows discord among people. It’s divide and conquer, isn’t it?”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was urged to apologise for mocking Sir Keir Starmer’s stance on trans people in February. During the Prime Minister's Questions, the PM laughed and mocked the Labour leader for his inconsistent “definition of a woman”.

In December, the Conservative Party’s deputy chair for women came under fire for alleged transphobic comments about a political opponent. MP Rachel Maclean shared a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, labelling trans woman Melissa Poulton as “a man who wears a wig and refers to himself as a 'proud lesbian’.”

Additionally, Mrs. Maclean included a supportive comment of her own when sharing the post. Ahead of a new series of Doctor Who next month, Ncuti expressed to Attitude magazine his feelings about the relevance of ‘Doctor Who’ today.

He remarked: “The Doctor tirelessly fights for every life, including his villains. He extends mercy and compassion to everyone because he recognizes that we are interdependent and that everything has its place. It’s wonderful that a show like Doctor Who continues in these times.”

Ncuti, who first appeared as the Time Lord during the show's 60th anniversary celebrations in 2023, is set for his own series of episodes this year, with more planned for 2025. He also discussed some racist backlash to the Doctor being portrayed by a Black actor.

He mentioned: “I don’t closely follow it. The hate? It's somewhat intriguing to me because of the amount of energy they devote to it… I think they need to find a hobby. But on a broader scale, we are witnessing changes in casting, power dynamics, and the status quo. The change isn’t rapid, it could certainly accelerate a bit, but you can see some people are struggling as things evolve.”

Doctor Who was the top-watched drama on Christmas Day 2023 as Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor debuted in ‘The Church On Ruby Road.’
