Dua Lipa Distances from DaBaby Over anti-LGBTQ+, HIV Comments

"Princess of Pop" Dua Lipa has responded to offensive comments about the LGBTQ+ community and people with HIV and AIDS made by rapper DaBaby.

The US rapper, who appeared as a guest artist on Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia hit "Levitating", allegedly made the comments at a US festival, where he invited the audience to "put [their] cell phones up", unless they had HIV or were gay men who "had sex in carparks". He also claimed that having HIV will kill you in two to three weeks, a fact that has been disproven by the millions of people who have HIV and have been able to live long lives.

DaBaby's comments were backed by rapper TI, who claimed that if Lil Nas X - an artist who is very open about his sexuality - is able to say and do as he pleases, DaBaby should be able to do so as well. DaBaby's comment's have been strongly criticsed all round, including by leading HIV and AIDS charities.

Writing on Instagram, Dua Lipa said that she didn't "recognise this as the person I worked with" and stood "100% with the LGBTQ community".

"We need to come together to fight the stigma and ignorance around HIV and Aids," she added.

DaBaby accused people on the internet of "twisting" his words and claims he is appreciated by straight and gay fans.

He went on to claim his gay fans do not have AIDS, and called people with the illness "nasty" and "junkies on the street".

"Even my gay fans got standards," he added.

DaBaby is currently in the US Top Ten as a guest artist on Dua Lipa's hit, Levitating, and has a clothing collaboration with Boohoo. Boohoo says DaBaby's comments go against its "core values".

"Boohoo condemns the use of homophobic language and [we] are reviewing the relationship with DaBaby," the retailer said in a statement.

"We pride ourselves on representing the diverse customers we serve across the globe."
