First Same-Sex Couple Wedding Makes History In Costa Rica

Just after the new law legalising same-sex marriage in the Central American country of Costa Rica passed, a lesbian couple tied the knot becoming the first same-sex couple to do so. The couple’s wedding was broadcast on national TV as the culmination of a three-hour program celebrating marriage equality.

Costa Rican president Carlos Alvarado mentioned in a tweet that this new law has now recognised the rights lesbian and gay people always deserved. “Empathy and love should from now on be the guiding principles which will allow us to move forward and build a country where there is room for everyone,” he tweeted in Spanish.

The law was passed after the constitutional court declared the ban on same-sex weddings unconstitutional, and Enrique Sánchez, Costa Rica's first openly gay member of parliament, welcomed the change and praised those who had spent years lobbying for the same-sex marriage ban to be lifted. “With their experience, their struggles... they have helped build a society where there are no second-class families or second-rate people,” he said in a recent interview, according to the ‘BBC’.

Costa Rica is the first Central American country to legalise same-sex marriage. In South American countries like Argentina, Brazil Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay same-sex marriage is already possible.
