First Trans Women Runs For Prime Minister of Thailand
Pauline Ngarmpring has become the first transgender candidate for Prime Minister of Thailand, reports the Thomas Reuters Foundation.
Ngarmpring transitioned when she was 49 and has said she is “comfortable” with “nothing to hide.”
She has also admitted that while she is ready for a fight she knows she will most likely not be elected Prime Minister, that Thailand is not completely read for a trans leader just yet.
“I know having my candidacy is a symbolic gesture. I know I will not be prime minister now,” said Ngarmpring. “But we hope we will get some seats and represent LGBT people in the country. And perhaps next time, even a transgender woman will have a chance.”
She also hopes her candidacy may inspire others in the future, so that future generations “who may be transgender, gay, male or female” will be inspired.
