How to Foster an Authentic, Inclusive Work Environment

Mario Bello, Supply Chain Coordinator at Kite Pharma, spoke to myGwork about his commitment to being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and what fostering an authentically inclusive environment entails. With advice for those who wish to expand upon their allyship, he also shares the positive impact of vocal allies in the workplace.

Can you please introduce yourself and describe your role within your organization?

Allow me to introduce myself – I'm Mario Bello, originally from Mexico but residing in the Netherlands for the past 7 years. I'm happily part of a "throuple," a relationship with two partners, which I take immense pride in sharing. At Kite Pharma, I hold the role of Supply Chain Coordinator, overseeing order management for the UK market. Contributing to the fight against cancer through my work is truly fulfilling.

What is your experience of being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community?

I'm deeply committed to being an ally for the LGBTQ+ community. I actively engage in discussions to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and experiences faced by this community. My belief lies in advocating for inclusivity, respect, and equal rights for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

How can allies help create an inclusive workplace?

Allies are crucial in creating an inclusive workplace for the LGBTQ+ community. They educate themselves about LGBTQ+ issues, promote inclusive policies, and challenge biases. By using amplifying marginalized voices, and participating in LGBTQ+ events, allies foster an environment that values diverse identities. They also advocate for mental health awareness, encourage visibility, and set an example, contributing to a workplace that embraces diversity.

Would you work for a non-inclusive organization?

Working for a non-inclusive organization can be challenging, and my decision would depend on how the organization's values align with my own. The consideration encompasses my career aspirations and how comfortable I am with the prevailing organizational culture.

What makes an organization inclusive for you?

An organization becomes inclusive when every individual, irrespective of their background, identity, or characteristics, feels valued, respected, and supported. Such an environment celebrates diversity and integrates it into all facets of the organization, including recruitment practices, policies, and decision- making processes.

What advice would you give to LGBTQ+ people to better welcome allies?

For LGBTQ+ individuals looking to better welcome allies, fostering an inclusive environment involves education, empathy, and open conversations. Encouraging allies to ask considerate questions, share their own experiences, and engage in LGBTQ+ events is essential. Patience and gratitude are crucial, as is receptivity to feedback and celebrating instances of inclusivity.
