Kenya Delays Decision on Decriminalising Homosexuality

Kenya’s High Court has delayed its ruling on decimalising homosexuality in the country, reports NBC News.

The case regarded repealing Sections 162 (a) and (c), 163 and 165 of Kenya’s colonial-era penal code, originally introduced by the British Empire in 1930 these laws forbid sexual acts “against the order of nature”.

Judge Chacha Mwita told the courtroom the delay was necessary because of the massive amount of paperwork submitted.

"The judges on the bench also sit in other courts ... we need more time," Mwita said. "My file alone put together is above my height standing, so we are still working..."

Currently, same sex relations in Kenya are punished with up to 14-years in jail. 534 people were arrested under these laws between 2013 and 2017 alone.

The case is set to be a landmark ruling for gay rights on the African continent and will now be heard on May 24.
