LGBT+ Activists Are Teaming Up For First Online Global Pride

After Pride events all over the world have been either canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, LGBT+ activists are teaming up to create a virtual experience.

As ‘NBC News’ reports, several groups are behind the planning of a 24-hour, online “Global Pride” on the 27th of June, to take place virtually in cities all around the world. The initiative has been taken by InterPride, an international group of Pride organisers.

Ron deHarte, co-president of the United States Association of Prides and a member of the InterPride organising committee explained that the current working plan is to host a streaming event online that “will peak in time zones around the world, and in each of those time zones, those regional pride organizations and those local pride organizations will be directly involved in that programming component.”

“Global Pride will show the LGBTQIA+ movement for the very best it can be, showing solidarity at a time when so many of us are mourning, and strength when so many of us are feeling isolated and lonely,” Kristine Garina, president of the European Pride Organisers Association, said in an InterPride statement. “Above all, we will show our resilience and determination that Pride will be back bigger and stronger than ever before.”

Global Pride will be live-streamed on June 27, starting with East Asia, Australia and New Zealand and moving through timezones to the western United States, said Steve Taylor, spokesman for the European Pride Organisers Association (EPOA).

It will include musical performances, speeches, and key messages from human rights activists.
