LGBTQ+ rights front & center in Kamala Harris speech to teachers’ union

During her appearance today at the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) convention in Houston, Texas, Vice President Kamala Harris extensively discussed the harmful impact of book bans and anti-LGBTQ+ policies on teachers and children in America. She expressed her intention to focus on these issues in her presidential campaign, stating, “We are in a fight for our most fundamental freedoms.”

According to ‘LGBTQ Nation’, addressing the audience of teachers at the AFT’s annual gathering, Harris boldly declared, “Bring it on,” rallying them to stand firm against challenges to personal freedoms such as the right to choose and marriage equality. She highlighted her efforts in combating attacks on these freedoms, including advocating for federal legislation to uphold the protections of Roe v Wade and passing the Respect for Marriage Act.

Following the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v Wade, Harris criticised Justice Clarence Thomas’ stance as a warning of potential further reversals, emphasising the need to defend key rights. She drew a clear distinction between Democrats and Republican candidates influenced by the MAGA movement, emphasising the ongoing assault on essential freedoms across the nation.

Harris underscored the challenges faced by educators in promoting democracy, ensuring student safety, and teaching accurate history while confronting extremist threats to voting rights, gun safety, and education. She condemned attempts to restrict LGBTQ+ education in classrooms through laws like the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ legislation, portraying a stark contrast between progressive values and regressive policies.

Embracing her role as a champion of marriage equality, Harris recalled her early support for same-sex marriages and expressed concern over ongoing discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly in educational settings. She reaffirmed her commitment to combating bigotry and hate, safeguarding reproductive freedom, and advocating for equality and inclusivity in American society.

Amid chants of “Bring it on,” Harris concluded her speech with a resolute call to action, signalling her readiness to confront challenges and uphold the principles of freedom and equality.
