Mayor Leaves Labour Party Over Rampant Homophobia

Allan Barclay, Mayor of Hartlepool, has quit the Labour Party over what he describes as rampant homophobia and racist attitudes, reports Sky News.

In his resignation letter, which he announced yesterday (April 2), Barclay said he had seen pervasive “anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, disability discrimination and a general disrespect towards others” from party members.

He also claimed council leader Christopher Akers-Belcherwas “physically threatened by a Labour party member and also vilified in a local campaign meeting for being gay,” and that no one did anything about it.

“The sentiment expressed in these discussions was ‘the Labour Party cannot be lead into future elections by gay people’,” Barclay added.

“I am deeply distressed by the fact that no action has been taken to address this kind of behaviour.”
