New UK study finds there may be a ‘glass ceiling’ for gay people in the workplace

A new study just released from the IZA Institute of Labor Economics has found there may be a “glass ceiling” for gay people in the workplace. IZA collected data from 2009 to 2014 of roughly 6,000 people in the UK and found that gay men and women are “significantly more likely to have objective measures of workplace authority” compared to their heterosexual counterparts.

There was an overrepresentation of gay employees in lower level roles, but those numbers dropped by a large amount when IZA looked at gay men’s likelihood of gaining higher level management positions.

The study found that for gay men this situation was exasperated if they were a person of colour. Lesbians were also affected, though they correlated more to other forms of discrimination, such as with gender.
