Republican bill proposes ban on rainbow flags flying above US embassies

A new bill put forward by Republicans in the US congress proposes a complete ban on all flags but the American flag being flown above US embassies. The bill makes special mention this would include a ban on rainbow flags, the Washington Examiner reports.

The bill, introduced by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, asks to “prohibit the flying of any flag other than the United States flag over United States diplomatic and consular posts, and for other purposes.”

The rainbow flag does appear above several US embassies across the world in support of Pride month and the LGBT+ community.

United States Representative for South Carolina Jeff Duncan, one of the leaders behind the bill, explains: “The United States flag is the single greatest symbol of freedom the world has ever known, and there’s no reason for anything but Old Glory to be flying over our embassies and posts around the globe.”

The bill is rapidly gaining support, with 30 co-sponsors – all of whom have strong anti-LGBT histories.
