San Francisco gets world’s first LGBT+ Rotary Club

A Castro volunteer group in San Francisco, active in addressing homelessness, hunger, and healthcare, has become the world’s LGBT+ Rotary Club. Chapter president Lisa De Zordo said it took nearly two years to become an official Rotary Club.

Rotary International was founded in 1905 and is a service organisation whose sole purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, advance world understanding, goodwill and peace.

This San Francisco chapter is aiming to square its efforts towards helping three LGBT+ non-profits: Larkin Street Youth Services, Lyric, and Open House, aimed at helping homelessness, career development for young LGBT+, and the housing needs for seniors respectively.

“We have been involved in several community cleanups,” says De Zordo, “feeding the homeless, and provide monthly birthday dinners for a local organization that works with LGBTQ at-risk youth.”
