Strictly Come Dancing Dazzling Drag Routine Leaves Viewers With Mixed Reactions

Strictly Come Dancing’s last opening act has sparked a mixed reaction to the show’s viewers after male professionals Johannes Radebe, Giovanni Pernice and Gorka Marquez danced in drag alongside a giant pink stiletto in a Priscilla Queen of the Desert-inspired routine.

Although the show has already seen its first same-sex pairing when former professional boxer Nicola Adams was partnered with Katya Jones, and judge Craig Revel Horwood performed in drag back in 2019 when he wowed in a Hello, Dolly! routine, the new opening act was slammed as “weird” as viewers complained, according to ‘Birmingham Mail’.

Although many were delighted with Saturday night's performance as “fabulous” and the “campest, glitziest opening ever”, it didn't find favour with everyone.

One viewer wrote on Twitter: “Where is equality, why is it always the women that get pushed to one side?”

And another said: “Used to be a family show. Will stop watching.”

“It is one thing to support equal rights and completely another to promote homosexuality etc. Very sad indeed.”

“Strictly gone weird tonight,” tweeted another.

“My grandchildren are completely confused…” grumbled another viewer.

“So many questions from my 9 year old,” another tweeted.

But another countered: “Questions are never a problem, it's the answers that cause prejudice.”

“Opportunity for you to educate them then!” said another.

However, many were wowed by the performance, with one fan saying: “Johannes = talent goes beyond anything I've seen, he is divine. Gorka and Gio = proving heels and makeup make men even sexier to me.”

“Strictly is bringing the fab to fabulous tonight!” raved another.

“Fabulously camp and gorgeous in every way,” said a third.

Another gasped: “The Strictly lads in drag!!!! Life doesn't get better than this!!!”

“Never thought I'd see Gorka and Gio in drag. That was fabulous,” said one.

And yet another praised: “Best opening ever! Please keep up the inclusive content BBC and Strictly! Johannes you are the best!”
