Taiwan to allow gender neutral option for official documents

Taiwan is one step away from allowing a gender-neutral option for all their official documents, including passports. The option, which would allow people to mark their gender as an “x”, was pushed forward by the Taiwanese Gender Equality Committee (GEC) and is pending approval from the Ministry of the Interior. The legislation would affect household registration, national ID cards, driver’s licenses, and passports.

Taiwan would join the company of several other countries in allowing an “x” gender option: Canada, Australia, Denmark, Germany, Malta, New Zealand, Pakistan, India, Ireland and Nepal all either have, or are in the process of legislating, a third gender option. Australia being the first country to have that choice. The UK is still currently in midst of ongoing legal battles regarding third gender options.

This new legislation further boosts the reputation of the Taiwan as a surprisingly progressive island amongst conservative giants. Taiwan remains the first and only Asian country to have same-sex marriage.
