The Owl House Introduces Disney's First Non-Binary Character
The Owl House will introduce Disney's first non-binary character: Raine Whispers.
Avi Roque shared the news that they would be guest-starring in the newest episode of The Owl House “as Raine Whispers (pronouns: they/them), the sharp and hardworking Head Witch of the Bard Coven,” calling the role a “dream come true.” This will be Disney's first non-binary character. The episode, Season 2, Episode 7, 'Eda's Requiem,’ is available on Disney Channel and DisneyNow.
As ‘CBR’ writes, ‘The Owl House’ is no stranger to LGBT+ representation, as series creator Dana Terrace has fought for that representation in the show's main characters. As a result, The Owl House recently won a Peabody for "a wildly inventive other world that makes room for everyone and give[es] queer kids a welcome template alongside which to explore their own budding creative energies.”
Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch congratulated the series for being able to tell the LGBT+ story he wasn't able to with Gravity Falls, following The Owl House episode ‘Enchanting Grom Fright,’ in which series protagonist Luz goes to Grom with Amity, who has secretly had a crush on Luz. When Hirsch was working on Gravity Falls between 2012 and 2016, he explained, “Disney forbade me from any explicit LGBT+ [representation].”
He continued, “Apparently 'happiest place on Earth' meant 'straightest.' But as of today, thanks to [Terrace] and team there are explicitly queer animated main characters on Disney TV. I'm so proud and happy to say that.”
Fans can meet Raine Whispers in Season 2, Episode 7, "Eda's Requiem," which is now available on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW.
