Indonesian Air Force Refuses to recruit LGBT people, Calls Homosexuality A ‘Mental Disorder’

by Tim Gibson

The Indonesian Air Force has stirred up controversy online with its official twitter account tweeting that all soldiers were forbidden from committing immoral acts, including acts of homosexuality. When pressed for further information the Air Force replied that “there is a mental health test in the selection process. LGBT is included as a mental disorder. If there are still many candidate soldiers who are mentally healthy, then why should unhealthy ones be accepted?... soldiers must be physically and mentally healthy… Same-sex intercourse is a sin… even animals never miss their target in mating.”

While homosexuality is not completely illegal in Indonesia, LGBT+ people still face intense discrimination. Flogging and public canings are still used as punishments for being gay in many provinces of the country. In September, the Indonesian government pledged that they would “take further steps to ensure a safe and enabling environment for all human rights defenders,” including LGBT+ activists, yet the country still has a long way to go.
