SDE II, Field Innovation Team

United States , Herndon
Salary: $143,700 – $194,400 Annually

DESCRIPTION:

The Field Innovation team is a Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) group inside AWS. We work directly with customers and AWS service teams to build next-generation capabilities that help the world's largest enterprises get faster return on value from security, search, observability, and governance services.
We are hiring builders who wants to work at the intersection of customer impact and cutting-edge AI. You will design and ship commercial-grade products powered by modern AI technologies, including large language models, AI-assisted development tools, and emerging frameworks. From day one your code will be in production, and your architectural decisions will shape how Fortune 500 companies operate.

A day in the life
Your impact here will be immediate and visible. You will ship features that directly change how customers run their businesses, not wait 18 months to see your work in production. The team is small enough that your decisions carry real weight and large enough that you will always have someone to learn from. You will drive technical decisions around architecture, frameworks, and AI implementation strategies for projects that matter.
AI is not a side experiment on this team. It is a core part of the stack. You will build with large language models, AI-assisted development tools, agent frameworks, and retrieval-augmented generation as everyday engineering primitives. You will design and build robust, scalable software that Fortune 500 companies rely on, partner directly with AWS service teams to identify high-impact customer problems, and ship solutions end-to-end.
We operate across security, observability, search, and governance, but you do not need a background in any of them. What you need is curiosity, a bias for action, and a desire to work on the bleeding edge of technology. This is a team of engineers and scientists who care about craft, customer outcomes, and having fun doing the work.
Growth here is by design, not by accident. We assign projects based on what will stretch you. A broad mix of experience levels and a genuine culture of mentorship means you will level up fast, take on increasingly complex challenges, and develop into a more well-rounded engineer with every quarter.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of experience designing or architecting systems (design patterns, reliability, scaling).
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Java, Python, C++, Go, Rust, TypeScript, or similar).
- Experience building and operating large-scale, distributed systems or services.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Experience with AI/ML technologies: large language models, prompt engineering, vector databases, or ML inference pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with the full software development lifecycle: code reviews, CI/CD, testing, and operational excellence.
- Familiarity with AWS services (Lambda, ECS, DynamoDB, Bedrock, SageMaker, or similar cloud platforms).
- Track record of delivering customer-facing features end-to-end with high quality and velocity.
- Experience working in small, fast-moving teams where you wore multiple hats.
