DESCRIPTION:
Amazon is seeking a Subject Matter Expert in Refrigeration Systems to lead our grocery operations' refrigeration infrastructure. This role combines technical expertise with specialized knowledge of grocery operations and food safety requirements. The position focuses on developing technical standards, implementing sustainable solutions, and ensuring compliance with food safety regulations. This collaborative role involves working across teams to drive innovation, optimize system performance, and maintain exceptional food safety standards.
The ideal candidate will serve as the principal technical authority for refrigeration systems, driving innovation, efficiency, and reliability while ensuring compliance with food safety regulations. You will be responsible for developing technical standards, develop innovative solutions and implementing sustainable initiatives that optimize our refrigeration infrastructure.
This role requires extensive experience in grocery refrigeration systems, including medium and low-temperature applications, display cases, walk-in units, and central plant operations. The position demands a strong background in food safety protocols, HACCP principles, and regulatory compliance, combined with expertise in building automation systems and energy management.
The successful candidate will collaborate with multiple stakeholders to drive continuous improvement, implement new technologies, and maintain the highest standards of food safety and system reliability across our operations.
Key job responsibilities
- Provide field support for refrigeration sites across assigned geography including support for operations, field maintenance, and food safety partners
- Lead technical direction for refrigeration systems across grocery locations, including system specifications, performance optimization, and monitoring solutions
- Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance programs, quality assurance protocols, and sustainable practices for refrigeration systems
- Ensure compliance with food safety regulations while creating and maintaining standard operating procedures
- Drive innovation in refrigeration technology, focusing on energy efficiency and environmental impact reduction
- Design and deliver technical training programs for staff development and system maintenance excellence
- Technical leadership in commercial and industrial refrigeration systems

As a Sr. Industrial Design Engineer specializing in refrigeration, you'll be at the forefront of our sustainability mission, driving innovation in next-generation CO2 refrigeration systems that dramatically reduce our environmental footprint while maintaining the highest food safety standards. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams spanning mechanical engineering, operations, construction, and environmental compliance to design, optimize, and scale refrigeration solutions across our rapidly expanding network of micro-fulfillment centers and delivery stations.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree or above in Industrial, Mechanical, Civil Engineering or other related discipline
- Knowledge of retail food code and regulations governing grocery retail at local, state, and federal levels
- 5+ years of experience in commercial/industrial refrigeration systems, with at least 3 years specifically in grocery/supermarket refrigeration
- Experience with building automation systems and energy management
- Demonstrated experience with medium and low-temperature refrigeration systems, walk-in coolers and freezers, display cases, rack refrigeration systems, and CO2 (R744) refrigeration systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
