DESCRIPTION:
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, systems, security, and networking experts. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Our Anti-DDoS (Distributed Denial of Services) team, known as AWS Shield, is the first line of defense against DDoS threats worldwide, protecting all Amazon and AWS customers and services. Our architecture must be highly scalable, performant, and continually evolve against threats as they emerge. We aim to be fast, precise, and provide complete protection for all AWS services and customers.
The AWS Shield Response Team is looking for a Software Development Manager to help us build new services and improve our existing services for internal and external customers. You will work closely with other teams including Threat Research, Security, Operations, Networking, and Product to identify opportunities to launch new features and continually improve our defenses against DDoS events. In this role, you will lead part of the AWS Shield team which is responsible for developing scalable incident triage systems that protect customers and services from DDoS events. The services that you and your team develop will work out how to best mitigate the event, recover the availability of the targeted resource, dive into event forensics to identify ways of preventing a recurrence, and provide customer visibility as to what those systems are doing.
Key job responsibilities
- Own critical security initiatives - Lead multiple high-impact projects across existing and greenfield development. Define roadmaps balancing innovation with operational stability, delivering solutions that protect millions of customers.
- Build strategic partnerships - Collaborate with senior leaders across AWS security, research, and service teams. Influence technical direction beyond your organization and drive Shield capability adoption across AWS.
- Establish data-driven engineering culture - Design metrics frameworks measuring security effectiveness, system performance, and team productivity. Use insights to guide multi-quarter planning and resource allocation.
- Develop high-performing teams - Hire, mentor, and coach engineers. Provide career development, conduct performance management, and build team capabilities enabling autonomous decision-making.
- Drive operational excellence at scale - Set quality standards and engineering practices enabling reliable, secure system delivery. Balance velocity with stability while maintaining AWS's operational performance bar.
- Lead technical innovation - Stay ahead of emerging threat patterns and evaluate strategic technology choices.
