Purpose of Job
The Principal Risk Officer, Corporate Recovery will act as a senior member of a Corporate Recovery portfolio project team and can also be assigned as Operation Leader. Primarily, she/he is responsible for giving strong support to Associate Directors, Senior Risk Officers leading more complex and contentious Corporate Recovery projects with the aim to maximise the Bank’s recoveries through restructuring of balance sheets, asset sales or other value recovery actions, as appropriate. In addition, the Principal Risk Officer can be accountable for leading and advising on more straightforward projects in Corporate Recovery. The type of projects may involve non-performing debt across any of the sectors for both corporates and financial institutions in EBRD’s countries of operations. Furthermore, the Principal Risk Officer is required to prepare and actively participate in Corporate Recovery measures to provide “lessons learned” feedback across the project cycle to relevant departments at EBRD.
Background
Corporate Recovery manages the impaired loans and a legacy equity portfolio assets transferred to the department with the aim to recover best possible value for EBRD. By applying sound market and banking principles, Corporate Recovery takes whatever action is deemed necessary by the Bank to protect its interests in light of its mandate. This may include financial and operational restructurings, achieving an exit on the best available terms, or the enforcement of collateral and of any other of the Bank’s rights, as well as litigation. This role places Corporate Recovery frequently in a sensitive position vis-à-vis its external stakeholders and therefore also contributes to shape EBRD’s perception in the respective markets. Corporate Recovery also gives independent strategic advice to Banking Teams concerning assets which have been transferred on an advisory basis or otherwise upon request. Furthermore, CR plays an important role in providing constructive feedback across the project cycle through dissemination of “lessons learned” to relevant internal stakeholders.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
- Seeking guidance from the Director, Corporate Recovery, Lead Senior Risk Officers or Senior Risk Officers in relation to the design and implementation of recovery strategies and monitoring of allocated projects
- As a team member in complex deals led by Senior Risk Officers, contribute to project implementation, including strategy development, credit and financial analysis, negotiation and communication with borrower/investee companies and other stakeholders
- As Operations Leader execute and manage approved recovery strategies, including negotiations with borrowers/investee companies, third party/parallel and/or subordinated lenders, sponsors and other equity providers as required
- Ensuring adequate monitoring of internal and external reporting obligations within his/her responsibility as a team member or Operation Leader
- Co-ordinating with all relevant departments and Resident Offices within the Bank to ensure support for the strategy developed for each assigned project
- Preparing and defending stage 3 impairment or fair valuation updates for allocated impaired projects
- Liaising with external counterparties such as: legal firms, accountants, consultants, other advisors in the context of the allocated projects
- Sharing knowledge and expertise with other departments in the Bank
The responsibilities of the Principal Risk Officer are designed to allow for the development of expertise over time and expansion of responsibilities, potentially leading to assuming the role of Associate Director, Senior Risk Officer.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Relevant extensive work experience in Corporate Recovery or related field.
- Demonstrated relevant banking experience in a major financial institution or a consultancy firm (in the restructuring domain).
- Proven strong credit, analytical, corporate banking and deal execution experience, in particular:
- in transaction structuring, execution and project management
- in restructuring / work-out situations and/or shareholder value creation in distressed equity and- knowledge of insolvency and bankruptcy frameworks in the Bank’s countries of operations, acquired via first-hand experience in enforcing collateral and/or other credit support mechanisms through court processes - Sound credit and financial analysis skills
- Demonstrated ability to analyse and evaluate multi-facetted situations and make clear judgements in changing operations and hostile environments
- A proven track record of successfully dealing with complex project financing structures (more specifically in the sectors of energy, infrastructure PPPs etc) in EBRD’s countries of operations
- Proactive and creative approach to problem solving
- Good negotiation skills
- Demonstrated customer focus and highest integrity
- Computer literacy, conversant with Microsoft Office and spread sheet packages including financial analysis and modelling modules and AI
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Knowledge of at least one other language spoken in the Bank’s countries of operations is desirable
