About our Opportunity
We're looking for a Mechanical Fitter to join our Ball Clays Engineering team at Heathfield.
This is a hands‑on, site‑based role providing mechanical support to fixed plant and processing equipment across the Devon Ball Clays operations. You'll play a key part in maintaining plant availability through planned preventive maintenance, breakdown response and continuous improvement work.
You'll work closely with Plant Supervisors and the wider maintenance team to plan shutdown activities, ensure parts are ordered and available, and support equipment installations and improvement projects - all while maintaining a strong focus on safety and environmental standards.
What you will be doing
Mechanical maintenance & breakdown response
Carrying out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance on fixed plant, including mills, conveyors, fans, filters and packaging systems
Fault finding and resolving mechanical issues to minimise downtime
Supporting installation, commissioning and modification of equipment
Planning & site coordination
Working with Plant Supervisors to plan access, shutdowns and maintenance activities
Ordering and managing spares to support planned work
Recording work completed and contributing to root cause analysis
Safety, quality & compliance
Working in line with Imerys Safe Working Rules and site procedures
Maintaining clean, safe and organised work areas
Supporting compliance with EHSQ requirements at all times

Is comfortable reacting to breakdowns and prioritising work under pressure
What you will bring
Essential
Mechanical fitting experience within an industrial or processing environment
NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent apprenticeship)
Experience carrying out planned maintenance and breakdown repairs
Strong health, safety and environmental awareness
Valid license to drive in the UK
Desirable
Experience with packaging systems
Mobile plant or access certification (e.g. forklift, work platforms)
Welding experience (training can be provided)
Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g. SAP)
