Join Thermo Fisher Scientific as an IT/OT Engineer and contribute to the design, implementation, and support of integrated IT/OT solutions within a GMP-regulated manufacturing environment.
You will be part of a local IT team, collaborating closely with Automation, Data Engineering, PPI, Digital Project Management, and other cross-functional stakeholders. The role operates require strong coordination across distributed teams.
This position is focused on enabling secure, reliable, and scalable data acquisition from shop floor equipment to enterprise digital platforms, effectively bridging OT and IT domains. A hands-on approach, combined with solid technical judgment and collaboration skills, is essential for success.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform AS-IS technical assessments of production lines through documentation review, shop floor walk-throughs, and stakeholder interviews (Operations, Maintenance, Automation).
Design TO-BE architectures aligned with ISA-95 standards and system modeling methodologies.
Integrate PLCs and automation systems with IT/OT platforms, ensuring security, data integrity, performance, and reliability.
Test and troubleshoot OT networks and data pipelines, validating data quality, throughput, and stability.
Collaborate with Data Engineer to enable efficient ingestion of OT data into data lakes and analytics platforms.
Contribute to technical reviews and vendor discussions, proposing alternative solutions and improvements where appropriate.
Support validation and compliance activities by producing technical documentation (architecture diagrams, data flows, configurations, test evidence).
Apply industrial cybersecurity and networking principles to ensure secure OT/IT integration.
Contribute to digital transformation initiatives, including smart manufacturing, MES implementation, site's Historian, predictive maintenance, OEE monitoring, and performance analytics.
Site & Collaboration Model:
The role requires effective collaboration within a distributed, multidisciplinary team, interacting with stakeholders across multiple teams and locations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Technical diploma with 3–5 years of hands-on experience in OT/IT environments, or Bachelor’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electronics, Computer Engineering, or related STEM disciplines with relevant industrial experience.
At least 2 years of experience in automation, IIoT implementation, or system integration within manufacturing or process industries.
Hands-on experience with industrial communication protocols (OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus TCP).
Experience with SCADA systems (Rockwell FactoryTalk , GE iFix, WinCC, etc).
Experience integrating PLCs (Siemens S7 preferred; B&R or Rockwell acceptable).
Working knowledge of IT/OT networking concepts (VLANs, subnetting, firewalls, DMZ).
Familiarity with ISA-95 models and system architecture diagramming tools.
Basic knowledge of SQL databases and scripting for automation or data handling.
Fluency in Italian and English (minimum B2 level for technical communication).
