The Materials and Structural Analysis Division’s Electron Microscopy business enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries, increase productivity, and ultimately change the world. The MSD EM business designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales.

Combining hardware and software expertise in electron, ion, and light microscopy with deep application knowledge in life sciences, materials science, electronics, and natural resources markets, our worldwide Electron Microscopy team is dedicated to supporting customers’ pursuit of discovery and solutions to global challenges.

Position Summary

The Senior Account Manager, Life Sciences Electron Microscopy is responsible for driving growth and managing strategic customer relationships across academic institutions, research universities, and core facilities within a defined territory including Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado.

This role focuses on cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and volume electron microscopy (volume EM) solutions, partnering closely with leading researchers and facility directors to support advancements in structural biology, cryo-electron tomography, and 3D cellular imaging. The position plays a critical role in positioning Thermo Fisher Scientific as a trusted partner in cutting-edge academic research.

Responsibilities

The Account Manager is responsible for managing sales and account management activities for assigned academic accounts, defining and driving sales strategies, and ensuring achievement of bookings, revenue, and business goals.

  • Own all sales and account management responsibilities for Life Sciences Electron Microscopy solutions within academic institutions, national laboratories, and research centers across the assigned multi-state territory.

  • Focus on cryo-EM platforms, sample preparation workflows, and volume EM technologies supporting structural biology and advanced imaging research.

  • Develop and execute strategic account plans aligned to institutional priorities, grant funding cycles, and core facility growth initiatives.

  • Build strong relationships with principal investigators, lab managers, core facility directors, and university leadership across the region.

  • Identify, develop, and close opportunities across the full workflow, including instrumentation, automation, software, and service offerings.

  • Maintain accurate quarterly booking forecasts and provide regular updates to management.

  • Develop deep understanding of academic funding mechanisms, including federal grants (e.g., NIH), institutional funding, and shared instrumentation programs.

  • Confirm system configurations, specifications, and acceptance criteria to ensure successful order closure.

  • Partner with application scientists and product specialists to deliver technical demonstrations, workshops, and seminars tailored to academic audiences.

  • Drive adoption of advanced workflows such as single-particle analysis, cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), and large-volume 3D imaging techniques (e.g., serial block-face SEM, FIB-SEM).

  • Support and grow user communities and core facility networks, including workshops, seminars, and user group activities across the territory.

  • Manage product evaluations and proof-of-concept engagements in collaboration with internal teams.

  • Coordinate with field service and support teams to ensure excellent customer satisfaction and long-term success.

  • Maintain continuous learning to stay current with rapid advancements in cryo-EM and volume EM technologies and academic research trends.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Physics, Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).

  • Typically requires 5+ years of sales or account management experience in scientific instrumentation or related technologies.

  • Strong understanding of cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology, or advanced imaging workflows is highly desirable.

  • Experience working with or selling into academic or research environments.

  • Proven track record of managing complex capital equipment sales cycles.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage scientific audiences.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a highly matrixed organization.

  • Willingness to travel extensively across a multi-state territory (50% or more).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting or selling cryo-EM, cryo-ET, or volume EM workflows.

  • Familiarity with academic core facilities and shared instrumentation models.

  • Experience engaging with grant-funded purchasing processes (e.g., NIH, NSF).

  • Miller-Heiman strategic and conceptual selling experience is highly desirable.

  • Ability to secure access to U.S. Government laboratories and facilities.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $95,000.00–$142,475.00.
