20% of LGBTQ+ people have been sexually assaulted in a club, bar, or LGBTQ+ venue, new study finds

A recent survey by LGBT HERO, a national charity focused on LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing, has disclosed that over 20% of LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced sexual assault in clubs, bars, or LGBTQ+ venues.

“LGBTQ+ spaces should be places of safety, but sexual assault and harassment are happening where we should feel protected,” stated Ian Howley, the CEO of LGBT HERO. “We have an opportunity to change this together.”

Conducted via social media ads and hosted on the LGBT HERO website during January 2025, the survey revealed the following findings, according to ‘G Scene’:

• 61% reported being touched sexually or intimately without consent in social settings.

• 21% experienced sexual assault in an LGBTQ+ venue.

• 74% shared their experience with someone, but only 19% reported it to the police.

• 44% were assaulted by a stranger, while 31% identified their perpetrator as a friend.

LGBT HERO is urging LGBTQ+ venues to take specific actions:

• Implement strict zero-tolerance policies on sexual harassment and assault.

• Enforce mandatory consent training for venue staff.

• Develop clear reporting systems to support survivors.

• Promote community accountability to challenge harmful behaviours.

“We all have a responsibility to create an environment where consent is respected and survivors feel supported,” Howley continues. “Change isn’t just about awareness, it’s about action. That’s why we’re ready to work with LGBTQ+ venues, organizations, and community groups to create safer, more welcoming spaces for everyone.

“Our experience with the Lambeth Allies Programme, in collaboration with Lambeth Council, has demonstrated that real change is achievable when we unite to educate, train, and empower people to challenge unacceptable behavior.”

LGBT HERO is launching a new Sexual Assault and Consent campaign and support hub. This initiative includes awareness posters in LGBTQ+ venues, shareable videos on social media, and a podcast series in three parts discussing essential issues.
