DESCRIPTION:
Amazon is seeking a talented and motivated Motor Design Engineer to own the electromagnetic design, analysis, and production design-for-manufacturing of high-performance, cost-efficient electric motors and integrated actuator systems for our next-generation robotic platforms at substantial scale.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in electric motor design-including brushless DC (BLDC), permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), and vast experience with motor-manufacturing techniques, and a proven ability to manage external motor equipment vendors and contract design partners. This candidate must combine strong analytical skills with hands-on experience bringing precision motor and actuator systems from concept through volume manufacturing, and thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.
Key job responsibilities
•Design, model, and optimize electric motors (BLDC, PMSM, frameless BLDCs in various configurations such as radial, axial, and transversal flux) for high-torque-density robotic joint actuators
•Perform electromagnetic FEA (JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, MotorCAD, or equivalent) to predict performance, losses, cogging torque, and thermal behavior
•Own development of novel manufacturing-focused motor concepts based on well-established motor principles
•Develop design-for-manufacturing specifications (winding process, steel stamping, magnet sintering & magnetization, etc.) to enable cost-efficient volume production while maintaining tight performance tolerances
•Collaborate closely with gear, mechanical, controls, and firmware engineers to deliver fully integrated actuator modules
•Own vendor relationships for motor lamination stacks, winding houses, magnet suppliers, and contract motor design partners
•Define and validate motor test protocols (back-EMF, torque-speed curves, thermal characterization, efficiency maps, torque-ripple artefacts, core losses, etc.)
•Drive continuous improvement in motor cost, efficiency, torque density, and reliability across product generations
•Generate and maintain detailed motor specifications, drawings, and design documentation
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Experience with electrical theory, robotics, controls components, and automated equipment, or experience in the mechanical or controls field
- Experience interpreting and modifying mechanical and electrical drawings
- •Experience managing external vendors and co-design partnerships for motor components (laminations, windings, magnets)
- •Experience with motor design and electromagnetic FEA software (JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, MotorCAD, SPEED, or equivalent)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- •Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics with a focus on electric machine design
