Principal Software Engineer, IES LATECH & GIS

Brazil , Sao Paulo
Full-time

DESCRIPTION:

Are you excited by the challenge of building systems that power every transaction in Latin America's fastest-growing e-commerce marketplace? We're looking for a Principal Engineer (PE) to define the technical strategy and architecture for 2 of our key charters as part of Amazon growth in Latin America technology team within International Emerging Stores (IES) Latin America.

In this role, you will be the PE for a large, multi-city engineering organization, owning the architecture across two interconnected domains - expansion of Amazon logistic domains for sellers (FBA) and retail - spanning multiple critical services (99.99% up time) and a broad portfolio of systems. You'll shape the technical direction for high-throughput systems processing government-mandated invoices at massive scale, supporting a rapidly growing marketplace with 30%+ year-over-year growth.

Key job responsibilities
You will lead the technical strategy for Brazil's Tax Reform - the most significant fiscal transformation in the country's history - impacting hundreds of systems across multiple technology organizations, with immovable government deadlines and zero tolerance for non-compliance. You'll architect solutions that allow Amazon's fulfillment network to significantly expand across Brazilian states, driving new capabilities in cross-docking, sub-same-day delivery, transshipment, and multi-Tax ID management.
You will drive the migration from legacy systems to a modern event-driven platform, targeting substantial reduction in compliance implementation effort while maintaining zero downtime across dozens of use cases. You'll establish AI/GenAI strategies for engineering acceleration and set engineering standards across a rapidly growing organization.
This role demands regular collaboration with senior technical and business leaders up to VP/SVP level, and cross-organizational influence across hundreds of engineers in multiple partner organizations including Tax Engine, GIS, SCOT, FBA WW, Amazon Fulfillment Technologies, ShipTech, and Transportation Finance Services. You'll work daily with world-class engineers across São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Mexico City, Seattle, and Vancouver.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

10+ years of professional software development experience, with significant time spent designing and operating large-scale distributed systems
Experience architecting services processing high-throughput transactions (millions+ daily) with stringent availability requirements (99.99%+)
Experience leading technical strategy across multiple engineering teams and driving alignment across organizational boundaries
Experience with system migration and modernization at scale - replacing legacy systems while maintaining production traffic and backwards compatibility
Strong track record of influencing technical direction without direct authority, building consensus across diverse stakeholder groups

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with event-driven and asynchronous architectures, including event-sourced systems with complex orchestration flows and exactly-once processing guarantees
Experience operating in highly regulated environments where system failures carry severe business or legal consequences
Experience establishing engineering excellence practices, operational standards, and developer productivity strategies across large organizations
Experience with AI/ML or GenAI applied to engineering productivity or domain automation
Proficiency in English
