The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its EIB Global Directorate (GLO), International Partners Department (IP), Financial Inclusion Division (FIN INC), Trade Finance Unit (TF)* at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Trade/Export Finance Officer**.

*New name following Directorate reorganisation planned for July 2026

This is a full time position at grade 5 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

Purpose

In line with its strategic orientation, EIB aims to address trade and export finance gaps by providing de-risking and liquidity solutions to EU Export Credit Agencies (ECAs) and leading commercial banks. With the support of the European Commission, EIB leverages existing mandates to structure trade and export finance operations and to develop scalable financial instruments that strengthen a cohesive and competitive EU trade finance architecture.

Operating Network

You will contribute to the origination, structuring, appraisal, negotiation, and management of trade and export finance instruments with commercial banks (confirming and issuing banks) and/or ECAs. You will support cross-border trade by designing liquidity and risk sharing mechanisms, strengthening the capacity of partner financial institutions, and delivering measurable development impact in line with EIB Global's strategy.

Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of EIB Global trade and export finance framework, including strategies, policies, and product development in line with EIB objectives and external mandates.
  • Originate, appraise, structure, negotiate, and manage trade/ export finance facilities with commercial banks (confirming and issuing banks) and/or Export Credit Agencies.
  • Conduct detailed financial, credit, and institutional analysis of partner institutions including risk assessment and limit monitoring, assessment of governance, AML/CFT, ESG, and operational capacity.
  • Collaborate with other EIB services in monitoring and managing the trade and export finance portfolio, including exposure, concentration, performance, and early warning signals, and propose remedial actions where required.
  • Maintain and develop strong business relationships with:
    • Partner banks (confirming and issuing banks);
    • European Export Credit Agencies;
    • Peer International Financial Institutions and Development Finance Institutions;
    • The European Commission and relevant EU bodies.
  • Represent EIB Global in international trade/ export finance forums, working groups, and initiatives aimed at promoting best practices and market development.
  • Contribute to cross-directorate and cross-institutional initiatives, including product innovation, digitalisation, policy work, and knowledge sharing within EIB Global.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) preferably in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related discipline; a postgraduate qualification would be an advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in trade and/or export finance preferably at peer international financial institution (or a DFI), European Export Credit Agency, or a leading European/ international bank with strong emerging markets exposure.
  • Proven expertise in trade and/or export finance instruments, transaction processing, documentation, and risk mitigation techniques.
  • Strong expertise in credit risk analysis of financial institutions
  • Proven ability to work in a multicultural, international environment and manage relationships with financial institutions.
  • Knowledge of trade finance programmes of peer IFIs or DFIs, including their instruments and operating models, would be an advantage.
  • Strong familiarity of the Export Credit Agency ecosystem and a proven track record in designing and implementing trade/export finance operations in their support would be an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (***), with a good command of the other. (Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage).
