The role:

As a Process Engineer you will help drive our goals by:

  • Interface with scale-up engineers, process development chemists and external vendors or specialists as appropriate to ensure a robust and safe basis of process design is available in advance of capital projects.
  • Support site with CAPEX Project Initiation Requests, in particular for NPI and CAPEX projects, pulling in relevant Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) as needed.
  • On time in full technical deliverables through the project lifecycle
  • Ensure lessons learned are captured and incorporated in the process design through appropriate involvement of the Sector SMEs, Operations and Technology experts 
  • Chemical Process Engineering input into capital projects including:
    • Operations feasibility analysis for NPI to identify equipment needs for the plant
    • Support with plant capability assessments and option selection for NPI, including supporting development of PIRs for capital projects if needed
    • Review technology, provide heat and mass balances, identify missing data and tests required to fill gaps to ensure a data-led approach
    • Identify equipment options based on the data available, plant requirements and input from SMEs and supporting teams
    • Support with investigation of non-capital investment solutions
    • Work with Sector Mechanical Designer to provide pre-idea layouts for feasibility discussions
    • Technical scope, URS / technical design specifications and any other technical deliverables
    • Process Flow Diagrams
    • P&ID and design reviews
    • Hazard study attendance and key input on process
    • FAT/SAT and commissioning support including developing documentation as agreed with project team and on occasion leading commissioning activities as deemed appropriate
  • Ensure Process Safety is fully incorporated into design
  • Ensure fit for purpose design to meet process requirements / scope

Key skills that will help you succeed in this role:

  • Comfortable to challenge long-standing opinions and able to give and receive clear and unbiased information, can translate complex technical concepts to non-technical, senior level audiences.
  • Adaptable and can work in a dynamic fast paced environment 
  • Track record of delivery on short deadlines 
  • Able to balance risk and cost, and experience of risk management 
  • Can adapt easily with workload demands and able to work co-currently on multiple different scopes at the same time 
  • Able to work with innovation and creativity, inside and outside of individual projects 
  • Can work at a concept selection phase of projects, proposing various options to reach resolution. 
  • Strong inter-personal skills and able to work with a variety of teams and personalities. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with mainstream computer applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel etc. As well as ability to work on CAD platforms. 
  • Build strategic working relationships.
  • Accurate and displays attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with all levels; capacity to produce clear, concise papers to a high standard.

Qualification and Experience:

  • Degree in chemical engineering, and 8 years of experience in industry.
  • Significant experience in process engineering and project engineering for capital projects.
  • Significant experience working in plant operations
  • Experience of working in a matrix organisation
  • Significant experience and knowledge of process safety standards and their application through capital projects
  • Experience in delivery of reports and documentation for capital projects
  • Experience of working globally
  • Understanding of DSEAR / ATEX regulations
  • Proven knowledge and experience working in a regulated environment (e.g. COMAH, Chemical, Oil & Gas etc.)
  • Experience in chemical process in hazard industries
