Different leaders will be successful with different leadership styles and different scenarios will call for a range of styles. We are all unique, so it makes sense we will use our characteristics in order to succeed. However, when it comes to leadership there are some qualities that will be invaluable. Whether you're leading a business or a movement, these are the traits that will help you in success.

1. Positivity

A great leader is able to inspire and motivate your team and you won’t be able to do that with a cloud of negativity, even a crisis you should be able to pass on hope.

2. Empathy

This is perhaps one of the most important traits for a truly excellent leader, it is how you connect with those that you are leading. If you're leading a country it is vital that you are able to empathise with the issues the people in your country are facing. If you're leading a business, this is no different, you must be able to understand and relate to your employees, customers and clients.

3. Vision.

It is invaluable that a leader can look to the future, you should want to create a legacy that outlives us all and make a real long term impact on the world around us. This is only possible if you’re able to see a vision and plan ahead.

4. Time.

We all only have 24hours in a day, but it’s what we do with that time that really counts. Being able to manage your time and give time to others is vital to share your vision.

5. Resilience

Resilience will allow you to sustain momentum to keep going even when it gets difficult. You must be able to power-through high pressured circumstances and have the ability to adapt to obstacles in your way.

6. Patience

Our ability to lead requires us to be able to do so patiently. Those around you will often be willing to learn, but this needs time, be patient with them. Success doesn’t happen overnight, so be prepared to work hard and do so patiently.

7. Kindness

Show those that you are leading that you are all in it together. They need to see that you care on a human level, so check-in with them, celebrate their successes and understand we’re all human if they make mistakes.

8. Integrity

Losing the trust of those you are leading is a one-way route to failure for anyone in command. The best way to ensure that you never face a scandal where hidden shocking secrets are shared, is to never have anything to hide in the first place. A true leader must always act with integrity, as you are not just representing yourself but your community.

9. Being selfless

As yourself what your motivations are for aspiring to be a successful leader. If these are selfish, it is likely you won’t succeed. Great leaders are able to inspire others, and to do so you need them to empathise and understand your cause and motivation.

10. Open to sharing and showing vulnerability

A personal story that others can relate to is invaluable. If you can relate to those around you, they will believe in you and in turn believe in your leadership. In the past, vulnerability was seen as a weakness, but this is a fallacy. Being vulnerable will make you a better leader and allows you to empower others authentically.
