$30,000 Raised for Matthew Shepard Memorial Plaque

More than $30,000 has been raised to create a memorial plaque for Matthew Shepard near to where he was buried in Washington DC, Towleroad reports.

Shepard’s brutal 1998 murder sparked a reform in US hate crime law and brought an international spotlight to the discrimination and violence faced by LGBT+ people. He was finally laid to rest in October of this year, nearly two decades after his killing.

He was buried alongside former US President Woodrow Wilson and deaf-blind activist Helen Keller at the Washington National Cathedral after an exhaustive search for an appropriate and secure resting place – Shephard’s original funeral was interrupted by protestors.

The proposed bronze plaque for Shepard would be placed next to a plate for Helen Keller, in the chapel of St. Joseph of Arimathea.

“We now have the opportunity to add a second historic bronze plaque to the chapel—honouring Matthew Shepard,” the GoFundMe page reads.

“For decades to come, this will be a reverent site that resonates with meaning and memory for all, including LGBTQ Americans.”
