1. Stay away from juices

The Harvard School of Public Health found that those who had one or more servings of juice a day increased their likelihood of getting type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. While those that had two servings of fruits (like blueberries, grapes and apples) reduced their risk for diabetes by 23 percent.

2. If you don’t see it, you won’t eat it

If you hide your sugary treats you’re less likely to feel inclined to eat them. A study published in the Journal of Marketing found that people are more likely to overeat small treats from transparent packages than from opaque ones.

3. Have something before your meal

Having an appetizer, or even a small snack like an apple, before your meal can reduce your calorie intake over the course of the meal by up to 20 percent – according to a study from the Journal of American Medical Association.

4. Try sharing your meals

If you’re eating with someone why not split your meal and share it. Order a few share plates or sides from the menu, or cook up a bunch of vegetables to split.

5. Look at the whole buffet table before deciding what you want

If eating at a buffet quickly scan everything that’s available instead of just choosing as you go. You won’t accidently lump too much on your plate.
