1. Put in the time to make it great
The more complete your profile is the more likely it is to get attention from recruiters or mentors. Don’t get lazy, add links, add skills, write your bio. Don’t hold back!
2. Choose a good photo
Pick a clear, friendly, and above all, professional photo, this isn’t Facebook. Not sure what’s appropriate? Have a quick search at people in your industry and see what pics they’ve uploaded. A good tip is to show yourself in action, i.e. a photo of you writing on your computer, or at a conference. Showing you at work can convey passion and energy that is sometimes hard to communicate using words.
3. Use job descriptions to model your profile
Have a look at the descriptions on jobs you’re after and try and model your bio on that. Look at words that stand out, and words recruiters might be searching for.
4. Be warm and welcoming
Your summary section is the first impression mentors and recruiters will get of you, be professional, but also friendly and upbeat. Try to avoid long-winded, pompous speeches. Be you. Remember, this is a platform designed for interaction, invite other users to reach out to you.
5. You shouldn’t just list job duties
Your profile should show your best achievements, not just outline what you did day-to-day. Showcase your experience with quick, easy to read sentences, don’t be afraid to bullet point!
