1. Keep your friendships at work professional
While it’s always a good idea to keep a friendly demeanour with your co-workers and subordinates, a successful manager knows when to draw the line and stay professional. Stay away from office politics or gossip. Maintaining integrity when talking with co-workers will earn you their respect, and make it easier to delegate tasks and have your leadership trusted.
2. Restrict personal devices and social media
If you’re going to have a no mobile phones policy at work make sure you enforce it! If you catch employees updating their Facebook page in work hours or texting during a meeting, call them out on it. It is important that company time isn’t wasted, but also that you’re not seen as a pushover.
3. There’s no such thing as a job too small
Don’t let the more tedious side of management weigh you down. It’s important to stay on top of invoicing, or updating expense spreadsheets. Putting it off only increases the workload later on. Try and get it down pact to a 15 to 30 minute job and you’re less likely to harbour resentment about doing it. Remember, you’ll thank yourself for it later!
4. If your office has a dress code, keep it enforced
Dressing and looking professional can help maintain a work-focused environment. If you look the part, you’ll act the part. Dressing in jeans and a t-shirt can relax the workspace too much, wearing a suit or skirt will make you more inclined to focus on your work.
5. Stay involved in every part of your business
No matter the size of your business, things can become unmanageable when you don’t stay involved – if it’s double checking inventory, watching out on bookkeeping, or watching the expense accounts. When you stay involved it’s less likely a mistake will be made, or you’ll be taken advantage of.
