5 tips on getting ahead at work

5 tips on getting ahead at work

July 18, 2018

1. Be friendly with everyone

Build positive relationships with everyone at work, you do nothing but gain from being friendly with everyone, from managers to co-workers. Ask how their day is going, find a common interest.

2. Be wary of “poisonous” people

Every work environment has a toxic employee or two. Be careful of them and try not to get sucked into their negativity. Whether they’re managers on power-trips or disgruntled employees. Always be nice and positive and try to limit your interaction with them.

3. Don’t use your sick leave as extra holiday time

It’s definitely okay to use your sick leave if you’re actually sick! But don’t use it as an excuse for a three-day weekend or a way to extend your holiday time. Management will notice this and might look you over the next time they promote someone.

4. Take care of yourself in your spare time

Use your spare time to exercise and focus on maintaining a healthy diet. You’ll have more energy during work hours, look better, and feel less stressed. If your job requires special skills, use your spare time to improve yourself, do some extra research, practice and make yourself better.

5. Don’t back down from a challenge

If a challenging situation presents itself, don’t shy away or back down, rise to the occasion! Give it your best shot – and if you do need some extra help, don’t be afraid to ask. Your efforts will go noticed.
