5 tips to overcome the Bystander Effect in addressing LGBTQ+ discrimination in the workplace

October 15, 2025

Discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in the workplace remains a significant issue, despite advancements in rights and recognition. One critical barrier to addressing this discrimination is the Bystander Effect, whereby individuals are less likely to intervene in a situation when others are present.

This phenomenon can perpetuate harmful environments for LGBTQ+ employees - in fact, a recent myGwork survey revealed that almost half (48%) of all LGBTQ+ students have witnessed discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity at their place of study or work, compared to just 32% of non-LGBTQ+ students and graduates. To help combat this pattern, here are five tips to overcome the bystander effect and take meaningful steps against discrimination in the workplace.

1. Educate Yourself and Others

Understanding LGBTQ+ issues is fundamental in combating discrimination. Organize or attend workshops and training sessions that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. By educating yourself and your colleagues, you build empathy and awareness, making it easier to recognize when discrimination occurs. When people are informed, they feel more empowered to intervene, and knowledge can reduce the diffusion of responsibility often associated with the bystander effect.

2. Cultivate a Culture of Accountability

Encouraging a culture where everyone feels responsible for creating a safe and inclusive workplace can significantly diminish the bystander effect. Establish clear policies against discrimination, and ensure that there are procedures for reporting incidents. When all employees know their role in addressing discrimination, they may be more likely to take action when witnessing inappropriate behavior.

3. Lead by Example

Leadership plays a vital role in setting the tone for workplace culture. Leaders should actively demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity and equality by speaking out against discrimination and supporting LGBTQ+ rights. When employees see leaders take a stand, it can inspire them to do the same. Simple actions, such as publicly supporting LGBTQ+ events or acknowledging diversity initiatives, can encourage others to follow suit.

4. Encourage Open Dialogue

Creating an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing issues related to discrimination is critical. Encourage open dialogues about LGBTQ+ experiences and challenges in the workplace. This could be through regular team meetings, anonymous suggestion boxes, or dedicated forums. When conversations about such topics occur, it can empower people to take action and speak out against discrimination when they witness it.

5. Practice Active Bystanding

Transform the bystander effect into active bystanding by encouraging employees to take responsibility for intervening when they notice discriminatory behavior. Teach specific strategies for responses, such as expressing disapproval, offering support to the victim, or reporting the incident to HR. Role-playing scenarios or sharing past experiences can help people feel more prepared to act, reinforcing that even small interventions can make a significant difference. Remember, asking questions during this process is okay!

Overcoming the bystander effect is essential for addressing LGBTQ+ discrimination in the workplace. It is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to a workplace culture that is inclusive, respectful, and supportive for all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
