7 Tips for Writing a Good Resume

August 21, 2018

Writing a good resume can be challenging, but it’s a crucial skill to master if you want to land that job interview. Here are seven tips for punching up your resume and getting your foot in the door.

1. Choose the right format

Research different resume formats and choose the one the best suits the job you’re going after – whether it be a chronological, a functional, combination, or a targeted resume. Whatever format you choose, keep it simple!

2. Write a profile about yourself

Write about your objectives and make them specific to the job you’re applying for. The more specific you are the better.

3. Use bullet points and number your achievements

Less can be more when it comes to your resume. Make it easy to read, use brief action-orientated sentences that describe your roles at previous organisations. Bullet point everything and use numbers when possible to quantify your accomplishments.

4. Customise your resume for every job you send it out to

No one wants to see the generic resume you use for every job. Tailor your achievements to the job you’re applying for now. Take time to customise it and include the qualifications and skills the recruiter is looking for.

5. Focus on accomplishments over what you did day-to-day

The recruiter wants to know what you achieved at your last job, not just what you did. Focus on what you accomplished and not your job responsibilities.

6. Remember most employers use a screening system

That means they are scanning your resume for specific words, include keywords in your resume that they use in the job description.

7. Get rid of old jobs

Recruiters don’t need to see what you were doing a decade ago. Remember your resume is a synopsis of your employment history, not your life history.
