The millennial generation is growing and making an impact in the business world. New research by Xero, the global small business platform, has revealed that 38% of UK small business owners are under 35 and nearly half (44%) of all accounting and bookkeeping services provided to the small business market last year were provided to this age group. Furthermore, experts predicted that by late 2020, millennials will make up 35% of the global workforce with Gen Z making up 24%.
After myGwork’s webinar with SR Group we have collected below 7 career tips for millennials trying to find their place in the labour market.
Collect experiences
Experience is something that cannot be taught. Every experience, good or bad, becomes a valuable source of learning when seen as an opportunity. More than 40% of millennials expect to be in their current job for two years or less because they want to move on and collect new experiences. Take advantage of each position to learn as much as possible.
Focus on making a big impact immediately
From day one, it is important to get as much positive attention as possible. Being pro-active and making an impact in a company will help millennials get ahead faster, which is something they should be looking for. It is important that millennials learn as much as possible and begin mastering their job so they can move on to bigger projects. That way, they will become more valuable to the company.
Maintain your professional reputation
Burning bridges with colleagues can seem okay at the time but a millennial’s career still has a long way to go. You should be able to cultivate your past relationships to your colleagues.
Take risks
As a young person no one will blame you for making mistakes. As a millennial you should take risks when you feel there is a chance to do something really important. Instead of regretting the chances you didn’t take, go for them and learn in the process.
Travel so you can learn
In the global marketplace in which we live, companies are looking to expand and hire the best talent. Traveling and learning new languages can put millennials ‘ahead of the game’ and can give them the advantage and opportunity to work for different marketplaces around the globe.
Be confident
Confidence comes a long way. Embrace who you are and feel comfortable about how you do things. Few people will believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself.
Don’t be afraid to put in the ‘extra work’
Putting in the ‘extra work’ will not only help you gain experience, it will also mean that you put yourself in a better position for the future. Working long hours when you are young will turn to your advantage when you have established yourself at a younger age. The more you do early in your career, the more it will pay off later in life.
Do your research
First impressions are important. If as a millennial you are about to go to an interview it is imperative that you do your research on the company beforehand. Go to their website, check their D&I policies, research their history, read about the company’s values. Go there knowing who they are and that will help you bring new ideas to the table.
