AB Hernandez: Trans teen athlete at centre of Trump’s row with California speaks out

Trans teen athlete AB Hernandez has addressed the national controversy regarding her involvement in her high school’s track and field events, according to ‘MSN’.

Hernandez, who is said to have been part of her high school’s track team for three years, has been the subject of several protests outside her high school in Jurupa Valley, California.

The high school junior was even mentioned by U.S.A. president Donald Trump in a post on Truth Social on May 27, following her qualification for the California Interscholastic Federation State Track and Field Championships.

Trump claimed on Truth Social that a “transitioned male athlete” who “is practically unbeatable” had reached the finals. He described the situation as “totally demeaning to women and girls” and threatened to cut off federal funding, “maybe permanently,” if his anti-trans executive order is not adhered to.

In reaction to Trump’s funding threat, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced the implementation of a new “pilot entry process” for the CIF State Championships, which occurred from May 30-31.

According to the new policy, cisgender athletes who narrowly missed qualifying for the event, allegedly due to the inclusion of a trans athlete, are now given the opportunity to compete.

After securing multiple medals at the state championships, Hernandez has spoken out about the media attention regarding her participation.

In an interview with local news station KCRA 3, Hernandez remarked: “It’s definitely crazy. I mean, I get a lot of hate comments but, like, I don’t care. Like, [I’m a] 16-year-old girl with mad attitude, like you think I’m gonna care?”
