Aceh province in Indonesia bans trans women from working in salons

Aceh continues its crackdown on LGBT+ people by banning trans women from working in salons. In Indonesia working in salons is one of the few ways a trans woman can make money. The government has stated that any beauty business that is owned or employees trans people will have its permit pulled. Being LGBT+ is considered illegal in the area.

This comes after a group of transgendered women were rounded up from local salons and taken to a public area where they were paraded around, forced to wear men’s clothes, and had their heads shaved.

The arrests were part of an “Operation of Community Disease” and were conducted not just by police but by civilian vigilantes as well. Police Chief Ahmad Untung Surianata said that the women will be detained “until they really become men”. Untang said the raids were born of a necessity to protect future generations of Aceh from LGBT+ people, “the expression of men dressed like women needs serious attention.”

Indonesia is also set to pass a new bill proposing a ban on gay sex across the whole country. The new law would punish gay men for up to five years in prison and could be passed in under a week.
