Amazon’s ‘Mayor Pete’ Documentary Will Open Film Festival

Mayor Pete, a new documentary chronicling former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg’s run for the presidency, will debut at New York LGBTQ+ film festival NewFest next month.

The film tracks Buttigieg’s time on the campaign trail as the first gay candidate with a serious shot at winning the Democratic nomination, as LGBTQ Nation reports.

Buttigieg dropped out of the race when it became clear that Joe Biden would be the moderate candidate left standing at the end and endorsed Biden shortly after. Buttigieg’s endorsement was seen as a pivotal moment in the Biden campaign.

Buttigieg, now Biden’s Transportation Secretary, may not have made history as the first gay US President, but he is the first out gay man to serve as a Cabinet Secretary.

Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, recently welcomed twins into their homes and hearts.

So far, Amazon hasn’t released a trailer for the movie. The hybrid film festival starts on 15 October and the documentary will be available to stream as part of the activities or be seen in local theatres.

Both Pete and Chasten Buttigieg have been nominated for LGBTQ Nation’s Heroes awards, in the ‘Hero of the Year’ and ‘Social Media Hero’ categories respectively. Voting for award winners finishes at the end of the month.
