American Medical Association says there is no reason to ban trans people from the military

The American Medical Association (AMA) has released an official statement in response to Trump’s attempted trans military ban saying there is no medical reason to launch such a ban.

In a letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis the AMA wrote: “We believe there is no medically valid reason—including a diagnosis of gender dysphoria—to exclude transgender individuals from military service.

“Transgender individuals have served, and continue to serve, our country with honour, and we believe they should be allowed to continue doing so.”

The letter goes on to say that Mattis “mischaracterized and rejected the wide body of peer-reviewed research on the effectiveness of transgender medical care” when he gave his recommendation to the President.

The letter references a 2016 study by the RAND Corporation – commissioned by the Defence Department. The study found that the number of trans people requesting transitional medical care was so small that it would have “marginal impact” on healthcare costs.

“We support the finding of the RAND study conducted for the Department of Defense on the impact of transgender individuals in the military that the financial cost is negligible and a rounding error in the defence budget,” the letter continues.

“It should not be used as a reason to deny patriotic Americans an opportunity to serve their country. We should be honouring their service.”
