Two mothers with LGBT+ children and husbands in the US
military have helped launch a programme for LGBT+ military children. The
programme, called MilPride, was announced at the American Military Partner
Association’s (AMPA) annual gala.
The two mums who spearheaded the new programme, Amanda
Brewer and Jess Girven, both have transgender girls. Girven has been a military
mum for 15 years and has described the impetus for MilPride was knowing “many of these kids
are the only out LGBT kid at their base or school. That is a lonely feeling.”
Girven had to fight for her daughter, Blue, to have the right to use the bathroom that matched her gender identity and for her to receive puberty blockers. Despite this, she says, Blue has been warmly received by her classmates.
AMPA President, Ashley Broadway-Mack has said, “I really hope that we are able to reach as many of these military kids as we can.” Herself having a wife who serves in the military.
